The Spring Hill Police Department places a high emphasis on training. The Training Coordinator is responsible for the development of training courses, scheduling of training classes, and documentation of the training attended by all personnel. The Training Coordinator ensures that training meets the requirements of the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST). While POST requires 40 hours of training a year for police officers, Spring Hill Police Department exceeds the minimum required by conducting an average of 55 hours per year of training. This training includes 16 hours of Firearms, 16 hours of Defensive Tactics, 8 hours of Active Shooter, 8 hours of Emergency Vehicle Operations, and Law updates to name a few.
The responsibilities of this assignment include ordering new vehicles and equipment, maintaining all vehicles operated by police personnel including patrol, administrative, and investigator vehicles, tracking fuel usage, selling of service vehicles and equipment and coordinating scheduled maintenance, repairs, and equipment installation.
The Technical/Support Services Lieutenant is responsible for coordinating the department’s recruitment efforts in seeking qualified applicants for the police department. The recruitment process consists of a physical fitness test, written test, multiple interviews and extensive background investigation. Field Training Program
The Spring Hill Police Department Field Training and Evaluation Program is designed to provide individual instruction to police officer trainees by trained and experienced officers; Field Training Officers (FTO’s). The goal of the program is to expose the trainee to a wide range of law enforcement duties and develop the knowledge and skills of the trainee to ensure that he/she is ready to perform to the high standards of the Spring Hill Police Department.
After graduation from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy, which provides ten weeks of state mandated training, recruit officers are assigned to the FTO Program. Trainees with no prior experience are assigned to the program for no less than 14 weeks while those with prior experience may be placed in an accelerated program of no less than 6 weeks. While in the FTO Program recruit officers are assigned to a number of different FTO’s. Trainees are evaluated daily on a series of tasks including performance, knowledge, attitude, relationships and appearance. The program concludes with the Solo Phase which allows the trainee to operate as a solo officer while being evaluated by an FTO. Upon graduating from the FTO Program, officers are assigned to the Patrol Division and are evaluated monthly by a shift supervisor until completing a one year probationary period.
Property and Evidence
The responsibilities of this assignment include the intake, proper storage, ensuring chain of custody, submittal of evidence to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory, and disposal of all property/evidence. The Evidence Officer prepares evidence for court proceedings when requested and testifies at trials as to the procedures of evidence. This assignment has the responsibility of managing the department Accreditation Program. This program is designed to (1) increase law enforcement capabilities to prevent and control crime; (2) increase agency effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of law enforcement services; (3) increase cooperation and coordination with other law enforcement agencies and with other agencies of the criminal justice system; and (4) increase citizen and employee confidence in the goals, objectives, policies, and practices of the agency. In addition, it provides law enforcement agencies an opportunity to demonstrate, voluntarily, that they meet an established set of professional standards.
C.O.P.S. / Community Relations
The C.O.P.S. officer is the department’s coordinator for Community Relation events and Neighborhood Watch. The responsibility of this assignment is to create a bond between Law Enforcement and the community.
- Assist citizens with starting and maintaining Neighborhood Watch Programs
- Speak to various community groups about crime prevention and personal safety
- Conduct tours of the police department for various groups including Cub Scouts and pre-schools
- Provide training to the community on topics that include identity theft, residential surveys, child safety, etc.
- Set up at events or meetings to fingerprint children and make child ID cards
- Conduct car seat checks for daycares, schools, mom’s clubs, etc.

What Is Neighborhood Watch?
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime, solve problems, and improve the quality of life in your area. In it you will get to know and work with your neighbors, and learn how to:
Recognize and report crimes and suspicious activities
Protect yourself, your family, and your property
Protect your neighbor’s family and property
Identify crime and disorder problems in your area and work with Spring Hill Police Department personnel
to solve them.
What is Citizen’s Police Academy?
The Spring Hill Police Department is currently seeking to conduct a Citizen Police Academy. Should the police department adopt this program, it will be designed to offer the citizens an explanation on how the police department functions and operates on a daily basis. The academy will cover areas such as:
- Department Organization
- Use of Force
- Patrol Operations
- Community Programs
- Traffic Enforcement/Accident Investigation and DUI
- Criminal Investigations Division
firearms familiarization among others.
Fingerprinting is conducted on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. each week. This is generally done for persons attempting to become employed in areas such as banking, education or medical fields. Child ID Cards
Child ID Cards provide information about your child that will assist law enforcement in the event your child becomes missing. These are available at most events the police department takes part in, however you may obtain one by bringing your child to the police department. Drug Take-Back Collection Program
Spring Hill Police Department offers a place for the public to safely and anonymously dispose of prescription drugs. This program serves two purposes. First by reducing the risk of prescription drugs entering water supplies, potentially harming aquatic life or getting into a human water supply. Perhaps more importantly, take-back programs reduce the risk of prescription drugs being consumed inappropriately—either by accident or through illegal sale. Widespread anecdotal and survey evidence indicates that a huge portion of illegal prescription drug use occurs when people raid friends’ and relatives’ medicine cabinets.

How to drop off your prescription medication:
1) Drop off is safe and anonymous. No ID is required and no questions will be asked.
2) Use a marker to cross out your name on the prescription labels.
3) Keep medicines in their original container and place in a sealed, plastic bag.
4) DO NOT submit needles, syringes or other sharps.
