Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides local governments a valuable tool for assessing and dealing with change, it is made up of layers of data, aerial photographs, and databases.
GIS provides a way to gather data from diverse sources and look at it in a systematic way and track development. Currently data gathered using GIS provides the city an overview of the utilities infrastructure within the city limits. Gathering GPS positions of the water distribution system tanks, pump stations, valves, and fire hydrants, the wastewater collection system lift stations and manholes, and the storm water drainage system catch basins, headwalls, and discharge points we can utilize overlays to see the “big picture” of the city’s infrastructure. This allows the city to evaluate and plan connectivity to other sections already developed. For the water distribution system connecting the new systems to ones already established provides continued services to our citizens in the event of a line break or scheduled maintenance in a particular area.
We coordinate with Maury and Williamson Counties GIS departments sharing aerial and parcel data as it is updated. We also coordinate updates for addresses and roads with the counties E-911 Districts to maintain an up to date database for the city’s E-911 dispatch center to expedite Police, Fire, and EMS response. |
